What are the main types of sex toys?
There are roughly nine categories worth knowing, and the useful way to sort them isnât alphabetical. Sort by what they do to the body: external stimulation, internal, both at once, anal, and wearable. In a 2024 study of 11,944 adults across six European countries, dildos and vibrators were the most commonly owned types, followed by restraints, penis rings, and anal toys (Hald, Pavan & Ăverup, Journal of Sex Research, 2024).

External stimulation. Bullet and egg vibrators are small, single-motor, and the most forgiving starting point. Wand vibrators are larger, mains-or-battery powered, and much stronger; they were originally sold as muscle massagers and still work as one. One note on that survey before we go further: it used a convenience sample rather than a representative one, and it was funded by a retailer. Itâs still the largest dataset of its kind. But it describes European respondents, not Gulf ones, and weâll come back to that limitation later.
What does âbody-safeâ actually mean?
Legally and technically, almost nothing. âBody-safeâ is a marketing phrase with no certifying body behind it. There is exactly one international standard written for this product category, ISO 3533:2021, âSex toys â Design and safety requirements for products in direct contact with genitalia, the anus, or bothâ, and compliance with it is entirely voluntary (ISO, 2021).
Not one of the six top-ranking beginner guides we reviewed mentions that this standard exists.
What ISO 3533 asks for doubles as a checklist you can apply to any product listing. The standard covers physical hazard risk assessment, electrical safety, chemical safety, and biocompatibility. It also mandates specific user information: the materials in contact with genitalia or the anus, a lot number, operating instructions, and a statement of compliance. It explicitly excludes medical devices, cosmetics, and lubricants. The standard grew out of Swedish work after studies documented rising emergency-room admissions for retained objects caused by badly designed products.
So a listing that names its materials and carries a lot number is telling you something real. A listing that says âbody-safe siliconeâ and nothing else is telling you nothing.
Now, what about regulators? The honest answer has more texture than either camp online admits.

The FDA line surprises people. The agency does classify genital vibrators as Class II medical devices under 21 CFR 884.5960, exempt from premarket notification (Cornell Legal Information Institute). But read the identification clause: the classification applies to devices âintended and labeled for therapeutic use.â Market a product as a novelty and it falls outside the rule completely. Most do.
Europe is stricter in one specific way that matters. REACH Annex XVII, entry 51 restricts DEHP, DBP, BBP and DIBP to below 0.1% by weight of plasticised material, individually or summed. Regulation (EU) 2018/2005 expanded that restriction from toys and childcare articles to articles generally, including those contacting human mucous membranes, applicable from 7 July 2020 (ECHA).
One clarification, because we want to be precise rather than merely reassuring: no regulator has published a document naming sex toys as excluded from the EU Toy Safety Directive. The exclusion follows from the Directiveâs own definition, which scopes âtoysâ to products designed for play by children under 14. Thatâs an inference from the text, not a cited finding.

What are sex toys made from, and which materials are safe?
One distinction does most of the work: porous versus non-porous. Non-porous materials can be sterilised. Porous ones cannot, regardless of price. In a Danish Environmental Protection Agency survey, phthalates were detected in 10 of 15 sex toys analysed, at concentrations ranging from 0.12 g/kg to 702 g/kg: that upper figure is 70.2% of the productâs weight (Danish EPA, Survey No. 77, 2006).

Now the evidence, and weâre going to give you both halves of it.
The Danish EPA study is the most detailed government analysis available. Sixteen products were screened; six went to migration testing. Beyond the phthalate findings, one hard-ABS product carried 200 ppm of cadmium against a 75 ppm limit. But 7 of the 16 products posed no health risk even under worst-case use assumptions. That number belongs in the same paragraph as the alarming one.
The modern peer-reviewed anchor is smaller and more troubling in a different way. Researchers at Duke and Appalachian State tested four products and found phthalates known to disrupt endocrine function in all of them, at levels exceeding hazard warnings. Some products labelled âphthalate-freeâ contained phthalates (Sipe et al., Microplastics and Nanoplastics, 2023).
That single finding is the most useful thing in this section, because it tells you a label is not evidence. The authors are also careful about their own limits, and so are we: four products is not a representative sample of the category, and their abrasion testing represents an upper bound rather than normal use. They say so explicitly.
And now the counter-evidence, because a guide that only shows you the scary numbers is selling something.
In 2017 the Swedish Chemicals Agency surveyed 44 sex toys. Roughly 2% contained banned chemicals. For comparison, the same agency had found hazardous substances, including lead, in 15% of childrenâs toys. Three of the 44 items (leather and bondage tape products, not insertables) carried phthalates above the 0.1% threshold, and one plastic dildo contained chlorinated paraffins (Swedish Chemicals Agency, reported by AFP via Malay Mail, 2017).
We could not reach the original Swedish report, so treat that as wire-service reporting of a regulatorâs findings rather than a primary citation. But the direction is clear, and it matters: by one national regulatorâs measurement, this product category tested safer than the toys sold for children.
Both things are true at once. Bad products exist and some are very bad. The category as a whole is not a chemical minefield. So what is the problem? Not safety: verifiability. And thatâs a solvable problem for a buyer who knows what to look for.
One last thing to flag. Youâll see the rule âif you can safely cook with it, itâs safe to put inside youâ repeated across dozens of guides. Itâs a decent mnemonic. We could not trace it to any authoritative source, so treat it as a rule of thumb rather than expert consensus.
Why does porous material matter for hygiene?
Because washing a porous toy does not decontaminate it. Researchers swabbed vibrators for HPV DNA before cleaning, immediately after cleaning with a commercial cleaner, and 24 hours later. On thermoplastic elastomer shafts, 89% (8 of 9) tested positive before cleaning, 56% (5 of 9) immediately after, and 40% (2 of 5) were still positive a full day later. On silicone, nothing was detectable at 24 hours (Anderson et al., Sexually Transmitted Infections, 2014).
Those numbers need their caveats stated plainly, not tucked into a footnote. The study followed 12 women aged 18 to 29. Detecting HPV DNA is not the same as detecting infectious virus, and neither is the same as demonstrating transmission between people. Vaccination status wasnât recorded. Itâs a small study making a narrow point.
The narrow point still holds, though, and itâs the one that should drive your purchase: the material, not the cleaning routine, determined the outcome.
Hereâs something you wonât read on a retailerâs page. We went looking for the study that proves porous toys harbour bacteria after cleaning (the claim every guide makes confidently), and it doesnât exist. There is no peer-reviewed research measuring bacterial retention on sex toys post-cleaning. What exists is adjacent: research on microbial adhesion inside silicone foam pores across wash cycles, on microbes trapped in re-sealed elastomer microcracks and shielded from disinfectant, and on disinfection failure against aged biofilms on dental elastomers.
So the bacteria mechanism is extrapolated from medical-device literature, not measured on these products. Weâd rather tell you that than pretend to a citation we donât have. The viral evidence above is direct; the bacterial reasoning is inference. Both point the same way.
Cleaning does not decontaminate porous material. In a 2014 study published in Sexually Transmitted Infections, 56% of thermoplastic elastomer vibrator shafts still tested positive for HPV DNA immediately after cleaning with a commercial cleaner, and 40% remained positive at 24 hours. Silicone showed none detectable at 24 hours. Sample size was 12; DNA detection does not establish transmission. (Anderson et al., 2014)
How do you store sex toys in Gulf heat?
Below about 25°C, out of direct sunlight, individually pouched in something that isnât PVC. We checked the six beginner guides currently ranking for this topic: all six say âstore in a cool, dry place,â and none of them gives a temperature, mentions UV, or mentions humidity at all. That advice was written for a temperate climate, and it quietly assumes a room that stays cool on its own.
It doesnât here. A closed bedroom on an exterior wall, with the AC off through the working day, is a different storage environment from a London flat, and so is a drawer that gets afternoon sun through a sheer curtain. We canât give you a measured figure for how hot your particular drawer gets, because that depends on your building. What we can do is explain the mechanisms, so you can judge your own storage spot rather than take a slogan on trust.
Three things degrade these products, and they act differently.
Heat. TPE and TPR soften as they approach their glass transition range. A softened sleeve deforms under its own weight, and the plasticiser that keeps it pliable migrates to the surface: that faintly oily film on an old TPE product is exactly that. Heat also weakens the adhesives holding two-part housings together, and lithium cells lose capacity permanently at sustained high temperatures.
UV. Sunlight breaks polymer chains at the surface. On silicone youâll see it first as a chalky, slightly tacky finish. On pigmented products, colour shift is the early warning. A toy stored on a windowsill or in a sheer-curtained room is getting a dose every day.
Humidity. Less of an issue in dry inland air, more of one in coastal Abu Dhabi and Dubai during late summer. Moisture reaches motor housings through charging ports and seams, and a damp storage bag will grow mould before the toy shows any sign of it.
We want to be straight about the limits of that diagram. The mechanisms are textbook material science. But nobody has published a study putting these specific products through a Dubai summer, so the 25°C figure is a conservative working ceiling derived from the materials, not a number a laboratory handed us.
The scenarios that bite here are the ordinary ones. A parked car, which becomes the hottest place you have access to. An apartment where the AC is off from 8am to 7pm, so the bedroom cycles hot every working day. A villa storage room with no cooling at all. And the trickiest one: in a shared or multigenerational household, the most discreet spot is often the hottest spot: the top of a wardrobe, a sealed box in a storeroom, a bag left in the car.
Practical setup, then. Interior cupboard on a shaded internal wall, not an exterior one. One pouch per item, in cotton or the manufacturerâs bag, because TPE stored against PVC can absorb plasticiser from the bag itself. A silica gel sachet in the drawer through the humid months. And dry it fully before it goes away. Trapped moisture is what reaches a motor housing through the seams. Not the bathroom, and not the car, in a way thatâs genuinely more absolute here than in a temperate climate.
Ambient heat, ultraviolet light and humidity each degrade sex toy materials through distinct mechanisms: heat softens TPE and drives plasticiser to the surface, UV breaks polymer chains at the surface of silicone, and humidity corrodes motor housings through seams and charging ports. None of the six top-ranking beginner guides mentions any of the three. Store below roughly 25°C, dark, dry, and individually pouched in non-PVC material.
Do you need lubricant, and does it matter which?
Yes, and the choice is a chemical exposure decision rather than just a comfort one. The Danish EPA measured DEHP migration from the same product under three conditions: 6 Âľg/dm² in artificial sweat, 40 Âľg/dm² with water-based lubricant, and 5,480 Âľg/dm² with oil-based lubricant. Thatâs roughly 100 times the water-based figure (Danish EPA, 2006).
A further detail from that report: for the worst sample, the Margin of Safety under maximum use with oil-based lubricant dropped to 100, below the factor of 250 the assessment recommends for pregnant and breastfeeding users.
Beyond the chemistry, there are two hard compatibility rules. Silicone lubricant degrades silicone toys; the two bond and the surface goes tacky and pitted. Oil-based products destroy latex, which matters if youâre using condoms over a porous sleeve, and thatâs a common and sensible practice.
Which leaves water-based lubricant as the default for every combination. Itâs compatible with all materials, it rinses off, and per the numbers above, itâs the low-migration option. Lubricant choice measurably changes chemical exposure from the same product. Danish EPA testing recorded DEHP migration at 6 ¾g/dm² in artificial sweat, 40 ¾g/dm² with water-based lubricant, and 5,480 ¾g/dm² with oil-based lubricant, roughly a hundredfold difference. Water-based lubricant is compatible with every toy material, unlike silicone lubricant with silicone toys or oil-based products with latex. (Danish EPA, 2006)
How do you choose your first toy?
Filter on material first, function second, features last. That order is not arbitrary: material is the only one of the three that a 2023 peer-reviewed analysis found misrepresented on the label itself, with phthalates present in products marketed as phthalate-free (Sipe et al., 2023, n=4, not representative of the category). Features you can evaluate from a photo. Material you have to interrogate.
Most first-time buyers work the list backwards, which is how someone ends up with a nine-mode app-controlled device made of unspecified âsiliconeâ that they use twice.
Hereâs where we part company with almost every beginner guide out there. The standard advice is âstart small.â We think thatâs the wrong axis. Start simple, not small.
What overwhelms a first-time user isnât physical size: itâs control complexity and decision load. A tiny bullet with seven modes, a two-button interface and a companion app requires you to learn a product while youâre already self-conscious. A straightforward single-motor silicone toy of ordinary dimensions asks nothing of you. Size is a preference youâll discover. Feature count is a burden you can decline up front.
So the path looks like this:
- What kind of stimulation? External, internal, both, or anal. This is the only genuinely personal question here, and if you donât know yet, external is the lowest-commitment answer.

One more correlation, stated carefully: in a nationally representative US survey of 2,056 women, those who used vibrators were more likely to have had a gynaecological exam in the past year: 72.4% versus 62.3%, a statistically significant difference (Herbenick et al., Journal of Sexual Medicine, 2009). Thatâs an association, not causation; toy use doesnât cause preventive care. It suggests the two travel together as parts of a general engagement with oneâs own body. Three things that make the conversation easier in practice. Raise it outside the bedroom, when nobodyâs mid-anything. Frame it as something youâre curious about together rather than something you need. And be ready for ânot yetâ to be the answer, which is a legitimate answer and not a rejection.
